How to deal with car dealers

Whether you are about to buy a used car or a new car, negotiating with car dealers might be quite challenging. As most of them would be interested in making more profit than providing their best services, you should be very cautious with the car dealers. Here are a few tips to deal them smartly.

Be clear with your requirements

You must be prepared very well before approaching a car dealer. List down all your requirements for your car. Make sure that you prioritize them according to your needs. Decide your budget approximately. Have a tolerance limit of at least 10 percent above or below the margin. Take a separate list of additional features and options you wish to have in your car only if they satisfy your budget. Browse through various car models from the manufacturer’s website and shortlist your favorite ones. You may discuss your doubts and clarifications with someone who own similar cars; they might be your friends, relatives, neighbors or colleagues. Ask them about their cars and performances. However, don’t make your final decision at this point.

Appear knowledgeable

When you are clear with your requirements, the next step is to approach the local car dealers. If you could find their contact number through their website, ask for an appointment by phone in order to avoid disappointment, in case they don’t work on that day. Make sure that you learn the meanings, abbreviations, common facts etc., about automobiles before approaching a dealer. Some examples of the commonly spoken automobile terms are MPFI, TDI, CRDI, 4 WD, ABS, Power Steering, Compression Ratio, In line/ V type engines, Cubic Capacity, Aerodynamics, Center of Gravity, Ground Clearance, Wheel base, Wheel track etc. to mention a few. When you appear knowledgeable to a car dealer, he will find it quite difficult to make tricky deals with you.

Be aware of the price

The price is one of the key factors that buyers consider when making car deals. If you are purchasing a used car, make sure that you are aware of the model’s first-hand price before you approach a car dealer. If you are planning to buy a new car, you may get the price details from the manufacturer’s website itself. However, different car dealers might offer different rates along with offers and other extra benefits. While making conversation with a salesperson, don’t utter any word about the pricing, even if you know them. Ask them for the best price they can offer. If you are planning to take a loan or other options, make sure that you have approached your financial limitations and considerations first.

Observe the salesperson’s behavior

A salesperson could trickily make the customers to buy their products because they are professionally trained to do that. However, some salesmen could be very kind and offer genuine information to you, if they are loyal and passionate about their work. You should find the difference between a good salesman and a tricky one. By observing their behavior, body language, hand gestures etc., you could guess their attitude towards your deal. However, you should have sufficient practice and experience to read people’s behavior. Yet, you can guess them to a certain extent. Some of the car dealers might display genuine and worthy offers to their customers. Being aware about them could benefit your deals. Whenever you approach a dealer, make your queries in a bold, gentle and professional manner to attract special attention towards you.

Don’t finalize the deal immediately

As the heading describes, don’t finalize your deal on your first visit to the dealer. Clear your doubts and queries about the car with the salesperson. Take a test drive of the car you intend to buy. Ask for brochures and pamphlets about other cars as well. Let them know that you are interested in buying a car sometime sooner. But, don’t give any hint about when you are actually planning to buy it. Tell the car dealer that you need sufficient time to decide on buying a car from them. You might be asked for contact number and other details for their records. Even if you are very much satisfied about their offer, don’t finalize it during your initial visits itself. If they are desperate for selling their cars, they may call you back to know your decision. Sometimes, they might offer a better deal when you slightly express your change of mind in going for other dealers. If they don’t approach you, visit your dealer and try to negotiate with them. If you find a worthy deal, then finalize your decision.
