Weekend DIY Delight: Old candles get new light

Weekend project

Candles have always been an integral part of our homes. They come in very handy and purposeful, despite of the fact, that today there are available a fair number of other gadgets that efficiently lighten up our office and homes during a power-cut. They have a charm and elegance of their own, which no other lighting object can replace.

A variety of candles are available in the market at cost-effective prices, but won’t it be nice if you could yourself make some candles at home by using the left-over wax. The remaining bits of used candles and the pieces, which overflow while a candle is burning and settle around it, can all be collected to make a new whole. You can use your creativity in decorating the candles, which would also gain you the appreciation of your family and friends. Image credit

Things you need
All the materials you need to gather for recycling candles are given below. All of them are easily available.

The left over candles that you have collected, a straw, wick, container (to shape candles), saucepan, pencil tape, and other decorations like glitter to decorate candles.

How to go about

Step 1: First of all, clean and cut all the candles collected into small pieces and put them in a saucepan.

Step 2: Heat the saucepan at a very low temperature and melt all the wax.

Step 3: Keep a container ready of which shape you would like the candle to be.

Step 4: Take a pencil and the straw and place them in the middle of the container. Then attach the wick to the pencil using the tape.

Step 5: Now, pour the melted wax into the container. Slowly the wax will start to harden.

Step 6: Keep checking whether the wax is properly attached to the wick, as the time for this cannot be predicted.

Step 7: Place the candles for a little time in the refrigerator, so that it will be easier for the candles to be removed in the container.

Step 8: The process is complete. Now decorate the candle as per your likes and creativity.

We advice

Candle-making can get hazardous, if not done with care. There are a few things which you must take care of. Following are a few suggestions, which must be adopted and will help you in achieving better results:

• Use gloves while making candles, as the melted wax is very hot and can burn your skin on contact. These burns are seldom serious, but precautions should be taken.

• Take special care while pouring the melted wax in containers.

• Refrigerate the containers after pouring the wax, so that the candle can be removed easily from it.

• Keep the wick properly attached to the pencil.
