Women smokers have tripled: report

<![CDATA[

More young women in the city are lighting up,a study by the directorate of public health has found.Women smokers have tripled in the last five years while the number of men smokers rose by one and half times.About 6% of women in the city are active smokers compared to 16% of men, according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey Report 2010 done by the Directorate of Public Health.

Experts say the reasons behind this increase are varied, but Chennai women want to light up for the same reasons as men. Some say they get their creative spurs from smoking.I cant start my work without a smoke.I need to light up many times in between.Otherwise I am scared of getting a block, said Priya Chander,32,a freelance creative designer in the advertising industry.Neha Francis,a collections manager from a private bank, feels smoke takes off the stress, particularly during the end of the month.I promise myself at the beginning of the month that I will not smoke.

But when work pressure builds up,that promise fades away, she said.

India has banned all forms of aggressive advertisements on television, movies, billboards or posters. But tobacco manufacturers seem to be finding new avenues to promote their product. They have introduced new brands and flavours for women.Menthol and strawberry are popular flavours. Some women brands are thinner, too. We have found highschool girls and young college women picking up the habit. Many are often regulars at hookah bars and parties, said SJ Govardhan, coordinator of Smoke-free Chennai project.
