Private hospitals get increased amounts of payments

There were again high increases in the amounts that medical schemes spent on private hospitals and specialists, the Council for Medical Schemes’s annual report for 2010/11 shows. There was a 10.1-percent increase over 2009 in the amount paid to private hospitals last year and a year-on-year increase of 12.2 percent on the amount paid to specialists.

Hospitals received R31.1 billion, or 37 percent, of the R84.7 billion that medical schemes paid to healthcare providers from your contributions last year, the annual report shows. Schemes paid 10.1 percent more, or R30.8 billion, to private hospitals last year, while the amount spent on provincial hospitals decreased by 2.6 percent to R281.5 million, the annual report says.

With an increase of 12.2 percent in the amount paid to specialists, they received R18.8 billion last year, or 22 percent of the total benefits paid.
